The  Boudria brothers combined for 41 points as the Westport basketball team staved off Blue Hills 59-56 in a non-league home game on Monday night. The win broke a two-game losing streak as Westport improved their record to 3-2.

“I’m proud of my sons. I’m proud of all of my players,” said head coach Scot Boudria. “And I’m very happy with the win.”

Five different Wildcats scored in the first quarter to overcome a Blue Hills 5-0 run and trail 11-12 after the first quarter.

Owen Boudria heats up

Then guard Owen Boudria got red hot. He ran the Blue Hills gauntlet to get to the hoop six times and drained a 3-pointer for 15 of his game high 25 points. When Boudria couldn’t score the first time driving to the hoop, he would grab his own rebound and put that in. He also put back his teammates’ missed shots. The athletic Boudria led the team with 6 steals and 11 rebounds during the game.

“At times we’ve depended on Owen too much,” said Coach Boudria. “I feel that we’re getting away from that.”

The elder Boudria scored 6 more points in the second half while double and tripled-teamed. That’s when younger brother Cole Boudria and senior transplant Alex Krynicki kicked into gear.

Krynicki worked the right side of the basket like a magician, dipping and deking his way by defenders to the hoop. The senior scored all of his 11 points in the second half.

“Alex made a bunch of good drives to the basket, where he either made a layup or got fouled,” Coach Boudria said. “He adds a strength and toughness to the team that we were missing last season.”

Cole Boudria worked mostly from the left side, draining four 3-pointers and a pair of jumpers for 16 points.

“I was due,” Cole Boudria said. “It was a big moment and I hit some big shots. It kind of gave us momentum for the fourth quarter. The defense all look at Owen. It opens up the rest of us to make plays. When I’m making big shots, it’s good.”

Every time Blue Hills tried to make a run, the sophomore would bury a three to the delight of the crowd.

“He used to be that kid who would shoot baskets at halftime,” joked Coach Boudria of his youngest son.

He’s now playing in his second year with the varsity and is beginning to play at a high level every time out.

“Cole is a very intelligent basketball player. He uses every lick of athletic ability that he has. He’s fiery and plays with intensity.”

Blue Hills threatens in the fourth quarter

Blue Hills threatened to make a game of it in the fourth quarter as they cut the lead to just 3 points with a minute left. But Coach Boudria’s savvy crew played stifling defense and did enough to hold onto the lead despite missing four free throws down the stretch.

“We played really good defense,” Coach Boudria said. “We limited their point guard Tyler Alexander in the second half. We made him fight for every point he got."

"We’re playing unselfishly and spreading the ball around," he said. "We took the lead tonight because we made our threes. The better we shoot from the 3-point-line, the more games we’ll win.”

Westport scoring: Owen Boudria led all scorers with 25 points, Cole Boudria scored 16 points, Alex Krynicki scored 11 points, Max Gallant scored 2 points and Wilfred DeJesus scored 1.

Next up: Westport travels to Bishop Stang at 6:30 p.m. on Monday
