Little Compton police have arrested an Acushnet woman accused of stealing 50 oregano and rosemary plants from a roadside stand in Adamsville last month.
Pamela Dapina, 75, of 103 Tootle Lane, Apt. 1, was arrested last Tuesday, June 3, after police said she admitted to the theft during an interview at police headquarters.
She faces one misdemeanor count of larceny under $1,500 and is scheduled to appear in Second Division District Court on Friday, June 27.
Stand owner Nicole Wordell, who suffered several thousand dollars’ worth of thefts last summer, opened her roadside shop for the season on Wednesday, May 7. After coming back from a coffee run, she noticed that several flats were missing, with no money in the honor box.
But footage captured by security cameras she installed after last summer’s thefts showed a woman driving a black Mercedes putting herbs in her back seat and leaving. Footage did not show her depositing money in the honor box.
In late May, police working on the case used Wordell’s video footage to determine the plate number of the Mercedes and traced it to a Fairhaven man, who said in a subsequent phone call with investigators that it was his, but is driven by Dapina, his girlfriend.
Officers called her, advised her of the thefts and asked if she’d been in Little Compton. She said no, but then said she’d been to Peckham’s Greenhouse a day earlier. Police asked her to come to the station for questioning that day, but she said she was not able to and would be in Little Compton Tuesday, June 3.
Dapina arrived at about 7:45 a.m. last Tuesday, was read her Miranda rights and during questioning about her involvement in the theft, answered “I did it,” when asked if she took the plants, police said. Police said she also acknowledged that the person shown in Wordell’s footage was her, but said she did indeed put money in the honor box, just not enough to cover the cost of the herbs.
She subsequently declined to give officers a statement on the larceny.
