A Raynham, Ma. man who police said had nearly three times the legal limit of alcohol in his system was arrested late Thursday night with driving under the influence, but not before he drove over several lawns, knocked over a light pole, nearly hit a police officer and his cruiser, and tried to drive away.
It all began just before 11:30 p.m., when police got a call about an SUV that had driven over several lawns and knocked over a light post near Country View Estates on Blackbird Court.
OfficersJoseph Barek responded to the area and found an SUV matching the description stopped at the intersection of Blackbird and Lark lanes. He also noticed that the driver, later identified as Brian Brown, 35, of Raynham, was unresponsive and slumped over the wheel, with his foot on the brakes.
Noting that the locked SUV was in running and in drive, officer Barek began banging on the window and told Brown to put it in park. After not responding for several minutes, police said Brown raised his head and began to drive forward.
As he attempted to drive away, Brown’s SUV nearly hit Barek’s parked cruiser and made off over the front lawn of a nearby house. Fearing the SUC would collide with the house, Barket ran after it and yelled at Brown to stop, then broke Barket’s driver side window, reached in and threw the vehicle into park.
As Barek told Brown to get out of the SUV, he instead put the vehicle into drive and began to move a second time. Barket again reached in, put the SUV in park, removed the keys and forcibly removed Brown.
By then, multiple officers had arrived to assist and police noted the smell of alcohol on Brown’s breath. Though Brown refused to take a field sobriety test, he later consented to a preliminary breath test that showed a .211 blood alcohol concentration.
Brown was charged with driving under the influence of liquor, BAC unknown.
