Arrests, warnings and more up dramatically this year in Tiverton

Covid was partly to blame for last year's lower numbers

It is shaping up to be a very busy year for the Tiverton Police Department, with key department indexes all rising, in many places substantially, over the same period last year.

The Tiverton Town Council was expected Tuesday evening to review a monthly police department report detailing the department's responses to incidents here.

Across 15 areas of departmental action, 14 have risen over the last year. Calls for service are up by 686, arrests have nearly doubled from 360 to 644, and police have made 2,925 traffic stops through the beginning of October. That's up 1,378 over last year — an approximate increase of 90 percent from 2020.

Police Chief Patrick Jones told the council in early September that this year has indeed been busier. Officers "wheeled back" some enforcement last year in response to the lower number of people on the town's roads during the height of the pandemic. But he is trying to get them out there as much as possible.

"This year has been exponentially higher," he told the council. "We have officers out there (and) we're seeing a definite uptick.

Among the increases this year are:

* A 20 percent increase in the number of incident calls over last year, from 1,315 to 1,579.

* An 18 percent increase in accidents

* A 79 percent increase in arrests, from 360 last year to 644 this year.

* A 45 percent increase in animal complaints.

* An 89 percent increase in traffic stops, from 1,547 last year to 2,925 this year.

* A 116 percent increase in citations, from 431 last year to 934 this year.

* A 150 percent increase in civil citations, from 228 last year to 570 this year.

* A 95 percent increase in verbal warnings issued, from 1,118 last year to 2,161 this year.

* A 75 percent increase in municipal citations issued, from 206 last year to 364 this year.
