Beverage tax not what businesses need now

To the editor:

Is now a good time to be raising taxes?  Definitely not.

Right now, the General Assembly is considering a beverage tax that will hit restaurants and small businesses and their employees the hardest.

Here’s the bottom line: A beverage tax will hurt sales significantly for restaurants, grocery stores, and local convenience stores who are just now getting on their feet after the pandemic. The sales decrease created by the tax will lead to more job losses and more store closures.

Please call your legislators today and tell them to oppose the beverage tax in House Bill 5715 and Senate Bill 327.
