PORTSMOUTH — A 38-year-old Bristol woman was arrested by Portsmouth Police on Tuesday, Aug. 2, after she allegedly fled the scene of a motor vehicle accident.

Christine E. Joiner, of 26 Noyes Ave., Bristol, was charged with driving under the influence (first offense), leaving the scene of an accident with damage resulting to another vehicle, and obstructing an officer in execution of duty, according to police.

Officers responded to the parking lot of Ace Hardware on East Main Road around 6:45 p.m. to investigate a report of a motor vehicle accident, according to police.

Upon arrival, they found Joiner, who said she was driving a vehicle and got into an accident down the roadway but fled the scene because she was “scared of the operator,” according to police.

Officers determined that Joiner was intoxicated, and she failed a subsequent field sobriety test, according to police. 

Once in custody, Joiner obstructed officers and became combative, police said. She was also cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test.

She was held at the police station pending her transport to 2nd District Court.

Monday, Aug. 1

Christopher J. Ball, 39, of 121 Ormerod Ave., was arrested at his home around 7:20 p.m. on a warrant that had been issued by the Tiverton Police Department. Tiverton Police responded to the scene and took custody of Ball, police said.

Tuesday, Aug. 2

Kristie L. Carroll, 43, of 745 Broadway 1, Fall River, was arrested on a Tiverton Police Department warrant  following a motor vehicle stop on Route 24 at Boyds Lane around 9:35 p.m. Tiverton Police responded to the scene and took custody of Carroll, police said.

Wednesday, Aug. 3

Karissa Houtchens, 34, of 14 West Passage Drive, was charged with DUI (first offense) after she was pulled over on Hummock Avenue around 11:40 a.m. The Portsmouth Fire Department dispatch had alerted police to check the condition of an operator after a vehicle was observed operating erratically and at excessive speeds, according to police. The vehicle was also spotted colliding with a residential mailbox and driving off, police said. Houtchens was subsequently pulled over in front of 119 Hummock Ave.

Gregory S. Mathias, 35, of 3283 East Main Road, was charged with possession of a controlled substance after being stopped on Park Avenue at Norseman Drive around 7:40 p.m. According to police, officers stopped the vehicle because the operator was using a mobile phone and failed to stop at a red light prior to turning right. Officers found a small plastic bag containing what was suspected to be cocaine located in the center console, police said.

Saturday, Aug. 6

Nery Saul Gomez Cante, 39, of 156 Tremont St., Central Falls, was arrested on a 3rd District Court bench warrant following a motor vehicle stop on West Main Road at Melville School around 9:20 p.m.

Sunday, Aug. 7

Matthew T. Schadone, 20, of 4 Kristen Drive, Greenville, was charged with DUI (first offense), after being pulled over on West Main Road at Raytheon around 2:45 a.m. for speeding and nearly striking a curb, police said. He was also cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test.

Cindy Y. Lopez Melgar, 26, of 825 Pontiac Ave., Cranston, was charged with domestic disorderly conduct after officers responded to a Stage Coach Road home to investigate a report of yelling and a domestic dispute around 11:35 p.m., police said. Lopez Melgar was determined to be the predominant aggressor of the dispute, which also involved a 33-year-old woman from North Kingstown, according to police. Lopez Melgar was held overnight pending her arraignment by a justice of the peace in the morning, police said.

Monday, Aug. 8

Jose L. Ruiz, Jr., 36, of 825 Pontiac Ave., Cranston, was charged around 12:30 a.m. with DUI (first offense) after his vehicle hit a parked car on Stage Coach Road, police said. The accident took place shortly before officers arrived to Stage Coach Road to investigate a domestic dispute (see above entry), police said. Ruiz was also cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test. He was held overnight and issued a District Court summons in the morning.
