Ronald J. Costa Sr., a life-long resident of Tiverton, died surrounded by family on May 19, 2021. He was the husband of the late Carol Jean (Tardonia) Costa and son of the late John and Lena (De Costa) Costa.
Ron was a 1961 graduate of BMC Durfee High School. He enlisted in the US Army in 1964 and served for 29 years, retiring as Master Sergeant in 1993. He was proud of his military achievements, including serving as an Aero Scout in the 2/9 Cavalry in Germany on the Czechoslovakian border, a technical advisor to the US Army Reserve Commanders in the Medical, Engineering, and Joint Staff branches, an Army Nurse Recruiter, and NATO analyst in the J-3 section of Hq Iceland Defense Force (NATO Northern Theater).
He received the Recruiter Ring, the highest award for recruiting, for commissioning Army nurses, and the Joint Services Achievement Award for his work improving the technical level of protection for NATO Joint personnel in training and equipment in case of nuclear, biological, and chemical attack. His final military assignment was the Retired Control Group. He continued to work as a civilian with the US Army as an advisor to the 368th Engineer Bn. in Attleboro, Mass. until he permanently retired in 1998.
Ron was a member of St. Theresa’s parish in Tiverton.
He leaves behind his children (and their spouses), Heidi (Paul) Klusak, Ron (Tina) Costa Jr., Susan Costa (Dylan) Paschke, Catherine (Victor) Colomb, and Laura Marzilli. He will be greatly missed by his eight grandchildren, Owen and Paige Klusak, Juliet and Ruby Costa, Augustus Costa Paschke, Adeline and Ava Colomb, and Roman Marzilli. He also leaves behind many cousins and wonderful new and life-long friends.
Visiting hours are Sunday, May 23, from 4 to 7 pm at Pocasset Funeral Home 462 Main Road, Tiverton. His funeral will take place Monday at 9 am from the funeral home with a Mass at St. Theresa’s Church at 10 am. Burial at Pocasset Hill Cemetery.
