The Tiverton softball team lost at Mt. Hope, 3-2, on Friday, and lost at home to Middletown, 6-5, on Tuesday. The loses dropped the D-III Tigers record to 2-3 overall.
Tiverton junior pitcher Grace Plourde pitched well in both games. Against Mt. Hope the righty struck out two batters and induced ten ground ball outs. “Grace pitched well in both games,” said Tigers head coach Cory Motta. “Mt. Hope has a very solid, well coached, team. We made 2 errors. They made none.” Junior slugger Emily Oakes hit her second homer of the year. Morgan Rodrigues scored the other tigers run. She drew a walk, went to third on two passed balls and scored on a single by Plourde.
“It was a great, well played, game by both teams,” said Coach Motta. “They made a few more plays than we did.
Crazy game at Middletown
Grace Plourde struck out ten Middletown hitters and it looked as though the Tigers were going to get back on the winning track, ahead, 5-4, with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. “It was a crazy ending,” Coach Motta said.
Middletown pitcher Karissa Dupuis lofted a fly ball to rightfield. Tigers right fielder, Emily Oakes misplayed the ball and it rolled towards the fence. Meanwhile, Dupuis began to round the bases. Centerfielder Morgan Rodrigues got to the ball first and threw to cut off man, Mackenzie Kiley. The shortstop fired a strike to catcher Paige Peace-Fortin at the plate. Dupuis attempted to leap over the catcher, to get home and it appeared that Peace-fortin made the tag.
“It was a bang, bang play at the plate,” said Coach Motta.
The umpire called Dupuis safe and the game was tied, 5-5. Ploude struck out the next batter to get out of the inning.
Middletown scored two runs off freshman relief pitcher Abby DeMello to end the game in the eighth.
"We didn't play well defensively, and that's on me," said Coach Motta who chose to work more on hitting in practice to face Middletown's firethrowing pitcher, Dupius.
Offense
Senior shortstop Mackenzie Kiley smacked three hits, scored two runs and drove in a run against Middletown. Sophomore first baseman Abigail Monkevicz also had three hits and drove in two runs. Plourde and Rodrigues each had a hit in the loss.
“Everyday the girls come to practice and are learning and getting better,” said Coach Motta. “I have nothing to complain about with the effort that they give everyday. The team is right there in all these close games. We just needs to clean up a couple of things to put us over the hump.”
