Tiverton blanks Barrington 8-0, wins third straight District title

Posted

Lexie Fredricks threw a complete game no-hitter as the Tiverton Majors Division All Star softball team blanked Barrington 8-0 in the District 2 Championship game at Town Farm Field on Monday night. Fredricks used a nasty fastball in striking out 14 and walking just 2 in 6 innings of work.

"Lexie pitched extremely well all year and in the district tournament," said head coach Frank Hill. "She moves the ball around the plate, changes speed and can throw all her different pitches for strikes. We also have a good defense behind her when the ball gets put in play."

The win was Tiverton's third District 2 title in a row.  The first two were under head coach Mike Martin, who led the team to the state championship in 2022. It is the first for coach Frank Hill.

Tiverton offense bashed 13 hits and scored 8 runs

The Tiverton offense bashed 13 hits off Barrington ace, Sarah Clegg, who struck out eight and allowed 13 hits and three walks.

"Barrington is a good team, with good pitching as well," said Coach Hill. "Their pitcher was able to hit the outside corner a lot in our  games against them. We were finally able to put some much needed hits together in the bottom of the 5th inning. Lexi finished the game strong by striking out the side in the 6th."

Tiverton scored two runs in the first inning, one in the second, and another in the fourth, before breaking the game open in the fifth inning with 4 more runs.

Fredricks, batting second, smashed two hits, scored two runs and drove in two runs for Tiverton. Fiver hitter Abby Coutu laced three hits and drove in two runs. Clean-up hitter Olivia Megna smacked two hits and scored a run. Autumn Mottram doubled, scored a run and drove in a run, Caitlyn St. Laurent singled home a run and Mia Cabral hit an inside the park homer with a little help from the Barrington defense in the fifth inning. the hit was ruled a triple with an error.

Tiverton moves on to host Cranston West in the Majors Division Softball State Tournament at Town Farm Field in Tiverton on Monday, July 8 at 5:45 p.m.
