Tiverton golfers 'Exude Potential' during senior season

Posted
The Tiverton golf team fell to Mt. Hope High School and East Providence on Friday, dropping the Tigers record to 3-5. Though the small talented senior laden squad "Exudes potential," according to head coach Mark Mello.
“We have a lot of potential," he said. "Most players started playing golf freshman year. I started coaching when they were sophomores and they have impressed me more and more, every year,” he said.
Tiverton has beaten Bay View, Rogers and Providence Country Day this season, while losing to Barrington, Middletown and Portsmouth as well as the Huskies and Townies in their last match. The Tigers are looking to gain momentum down the stretch as eye the state tournament in June.
The Tiverton squad consists of star athletes, Caleb McConnell, Fernando Deramo, Brandon Sowa, Jack Duggan, Jack Faria, Alex Monkevich, names that have been in the paper for football, basketball and other sports and would make you cringe if you had a ball, not a golf club in your hand.
McConnell, the Tiger’s number one golfer, is a super athlete, said Coach Mello.
“Caleb’s a good kid and currently our most consistent player.”
Sowa, the team’s number 2 golfer, starred at both football and basketball for Tiverton.
“Brandon can shoot low when he’s playing well,” Coach Mello said. “If he can play more consistent, he could be our best player.”
Duggan, the Tigers’ number three golfer played hoops for the high school squad.
“Jack's got the best swing on the team,” Coach Mello said. “He’s super committed and easy to teach.”
Faria, the team’s number four, splits his time between golf and baseball. Since joining the golf team, he’s been the Tigers’ most improved golfer, Coach Mello said.
Deramo and Monkevich both played for the high school basketball team this season and both split time in the top four for the Tigers.
“Fernando is a great athlete,” Coach Mello said. “He is our most talented player and Monk is a baseball starter and plays when he can.”
“Monk can really bomb the ball,” he said. “He’s definitely our longest hitter. He exudes potential.”
