Taxpayers here would see their payments to the Bristol Warren Regional School District top $40 million if the Joint Finance Committee on Thursday approves a 3 percent local spending increase sought by the district.
The committee is expected to meet at 7 p.m. Thursday to approve a bottom line school budget amount for the 2021-22 academic year. As proposed, local spending under the plan would rise 3 percent, 1 percentage point shy of the state-mandated cap.
Bristol, with approximately 63 percent of the district's students, would pay $28,251,897 into the district's operating and capital budgets. Warren would pay $13,269,909.
Regardless of how the vote turns out, the district will face unprecedented financial hardships this year. If the JFC fully funds the district’s request, Bristol Warren schools will still be $2.3 million shy of a balanced budget.
Superintendent Jonathan Brice last month laid out a long list of cuts that will need to be made to make up that difference, including the elimination of nearly two dozen full-time positions, widespread programmatic changes and the closure of administrative offices at the Oliver School in Bristol.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. and can be viewed via the Zoom online meeting service. As of Wednesday morning, a link to the meeting had not yet been posted on the district’s website.
Editor's note: This article was amended to add the local cost of capital budget expenses, which were not originally included in the numbers provided by the district.
