Ferris and White spark Huskies comeback victory

Mt. Hope beats Chariho 55-47

Junior forward Reyn Ferris and sophomore guard Elsa White combined for 38 points to fuel a Huskies 55-47 comeback victory over Chariho in an away game on Monday night. The win boosts the teams overall record to 2-8, as they  play their division schedule with nine games remaining. The win ended a five game slide for the Huskies who lost to Tiverton 40-29 at home on Friday night.

“This was a game we definitely needed to win,” said Huskies head coach Katie Kline. “I think that It’s going to help fuel the girls going forward.”

Ferris dominated the boards with 20 rebounds to go with her game high 20 points.

“Reyn really competed and had her teammate’s back,” said Coach Kline. “She was unstoppable under the basket and consistently out-rebounded the other team. Her offensive put-backs were essential in our comeback.”

White sank 7 of 15 shots for 18 points with two three pointers.

“Elsa is really stepping up as an underclassman and taking on a huge role this year,” said Coach Kline. “She kept her composure under pressure and hit two threes to start the team’s comeback.”

Chariho strikes first

Chariho came out on fire and looked to be running away with the game in the first half. Sophomore guard Keira Frias scored 10 of her 17 points in the first quarter and sophomore Jules White added 7 of her 15 points as the Chargers ran out to a 23-9 lead. Ferris and White each scored 3 points and senior guard Amani Jackson sank a three as the Huskies countered.

The Huskies gained ground in the second quarter. Aditi Mehta netted a three pointer, White added a jumper and a foul shot and Ferris and junior forward Lauren Clarke-Pais each added 2 points as the huskies cut the lead to 29-19 at halftime.

“Most games we’ve been down by about 10 at half time,” said Coach Kline about the team’s plight since moving up to D-II. “This was the first game that the girls came out in the third quarter and actually took the lead.”

Huskies get hot in the third quarter

Ferris and white came out of the break red hot. Ferris scored 12 of her 20 points and White scored 9 of 19 in the third quarter, while the Huskies defense held the Chargers to 12 points.

“We played more aggressively and were able force harder shots,” Coach Kline said of the Huskies' defense. "Along with Reyn, Lauren and Emily (Moran) also helped out a lot down low grabbing important rebounds on defense.”

Moran a freshman forward, also added two foul shots as the Huskies scored 24 points to overtake the Chargers 43-42 after three quarters.

Mt. Hope wasn’t finished, White and senior forward Mia Padula netted three pointers, Moran added 4 of her 6 points and Ferris sank two foul shots as the Huskies scored 12 points and held the Chargers to just 6 points in the final quarter.

“ I think this game will give them the confidence they need to realize that they do have the talent to comeback and win,” said Coach Kline. “We saw a lot of great things that we have yet to see this season so we are excited to keep building off of this win.”
