Fire tears through Bristol home

Posted

Crews from seven towns battled a fire inside a large home located a block from Mt. Hope Bay in Bristol on Saturday morning. Firefighters from Bristol, Warren, Barrington, Portsmouth, Rehoboth, East Providence and Swansea all responded to a fire that was ripping through the second floor and roof of the home at 40 Coggeshall Ave.

According to Dave Benevides, of the Bristol Fire Department, the department was called around 10:15 a.m. regarding a fire on the home’s top floor. The family was evacuated, with one child being checked for burns, according to Benevides.

Firefighters attacked the blaze from the ground, from ladders, and from a ladder truck before bringing the flames under control. Skies were sunny but temperatures were well below freezing throughout the morning as they fought to get the flames under control. However, the roof and large parts of the top floor were extremely damaged by then. The cause is unknown.

According to Bristol property records, the house is owned by Kenneth Benevides and Mary Lou Etu.
