The Mt. Hope softball team lost to Burrillville-North Smithfield Co-op, 5-0, during a home game at the high school’s new field on Thursday afternoon. The loss dropped the Huskies record to 7-3 in Division II. The team rode a four game winning streak into the game, but ran into the Co-op’s flame throwing pitcher, Juliana Colbert, who struck out 18 in her seven innings of work. Mt. Hope pitcher Reily Amaral also went the distance, striking out six and allowed five runs on ten hits with one walk in her seven innings. Amaral has pitched every game for the Huskies and holds a record of 7-3, with 107 strikeouts, just 16 walks and a 1.33 ERA. Amaral worked well with junior catcher Grace Stephenson who made a great catch ranging back for a pop fly at the back stop for an out early in the game.

Logan Levesque broke up Colbert’s no hitter, smashing a single in the fifth inning. Levesque, Jayda Silva, Reily Amaral and Gabby Hollands lead the team offensively according to head coach Craig Giarrusso.

“We are starting to come around offensively, as a team,” said Coach Giarrusso. “We are beginning to get important contributions from the entire lineup.”

Three of the Co-op’s five runs came on first baseman Sam Ledger’s two home runs. The first was a towering blast over the centerfield fence and the second was a line drive that cleared the fence by a foot.

The Huskies seniors are Maddy Razzino, Serena Sousa, Caleigh Bouchard, Gabrielle Hollands, Hannah Rodriques and Izzy Savinon. Both infield and outfield has played well according to Coach Giarrusso, as the team looks to make the playoffs, with a home and home series against Wheeler School left to the season.

“If we win out, we should finish in either third or fourth place,” Coach Giarrusso said.
