Mt. hope crushes Coventry and outlasts Pilgrim at Ocean State Credit Union Classic

The Mt. Hope girls basketball team crushed Coventry and outlasted Pilgrim to win the Ocean State Credit Union Holiday Classic played in Coventry on Wednesday afternoon. The pair of wins improved the Huskies’ record to 4-2 as they return to league play against Tiverton on Monday night. Huskies’ guard Abby Razzino scored a combined 40 points to lead the Huskies and earn tournament MVP. The senior scored 21 points in Mt. Hope’s 64-46 pummeling of Coventry on Tuesday and 19 in the 47-36 championship win over Pilgrim on Wednesday.

“Abby had two really big games both offensively and defensively,” said Huskies’ head coach Katherine Kline. “We made it a goal from the start of the tournament to win that trophy so the team was very happy with the outcome.”

Razzino played outstanding defensive, making 14 steals and bringing down 16 rebounds in the two games.

Elsa White and Lilly DaSilveira also earned all-tournament honors for their play. White’s outside shooting began to heat up against Coventry as she netted 15 points with a three in the fourth quarter. The junior got red hot in the championship, draining five three-pointers and scoring 17 points. “In the championship game we were a little slow to score,” said Coach Kline. “Elsa’s outside shooting was able to drive our offense against Pilgrim and on defense she made 10 steals between the two games.”

DaSilveira has become a player that Coach Kline can rely on. The freshman scored ten points in the Coventry win and chipped in six in the championship. She pulled down 13 rebounds, made seven steals and blocked two shots.

“Lilly has really stepped up,” said Coach Kline. “We’ve been short on players. She is someone I can count on to play anywhere on the court.”

Emily Moran filled in well at center for vacationing senior Reyn Ferris. The sophomore pulled down 15 rebounds during the tournament and sank a pair of three-pointers in the first game to jump start the offense. Moran scored a combined 12 points in the two games and was lauded by Coach Kline as was senior co-captain Lauren Clarke-Pais for her team play.

“Emily helped fire up the team,” she said of Moran. “Lauren Clarke-Pais was a great team player during the tournament. Their rebounds and assists were what set up our guards up for success.”

Pilgrim put up a fight in the championship, but Razzino was money down the stretch, scoring eight points in the fourth quarter. “We only led by three points at half time,” Coach Kline said. “But we were able to come together and win the game.”

Coach Kline felt good for the seniors who have played in the Classic three times.

“It was definitely a good feeling for the seniors to finish the tournament strong. We have a lot of league games left to play, but we’re ready to keep the momentum going into the new year.”

Mt. Hope scoring vs Coventry: Abby Razzino scored 21 points, Elsa White scored 15, Lilly DaSilveira scored 10, Emily Moran scored 9, Lauren Clarke-Pais and Maddy Butterworth each scored 4 and Hailey Ferreira added a free throw.

Mt. Hope scoring vs Abby Razzino scored 19 points, Elsa White scored 17, Lilly DaSilveira scored 6, Emily Moran scored 3 and Lauren Clarke-Pais added 2.
