Mt. Hope unbeaten streak extends to 5-0

AJ Jones struck out seven and drove in three runs as the Huskies pounded Classical, 10-0, at Al Morro Complex on Wednesday afternoon. The win boosts the Huskies unbeaten streak to 5-0, in Division II. Jones allowed one hit in three and two-thirds innings of work. Junior pitcher Dayton Van Amberg relieved Jones and struck out four more allowing just one hit. Senior Cameron Connor came on for the seventh and pitched a 1-2-3 inning and  struck out two to end the game.

“The team is really clicking,” said Huskies head coach Mike Mazzarella. Mt. Hope pitchers have allowed just four runs and 8 hits, in  five games this season. “We are getting terrific pitching from our entire pitching staff,” Coach Mazzarella said. “And it’s been a full team effort on the offensive end as well. We had eight players with at least 1 RBI. That speaks volumes to the depth we have.”

Offense on fire

The Huskies 2, 3 and 4 hitters have been on fire offensively. The trio bashed Classical's pitching for seven hits and six runs. Two hitter, junior rightfielder Jack Standish, went 3-5, with a triple, two singles, an RBI and two runs scored. Three hitter, senior shortstop Ryan Nappi, smacked a towering home run over the left field fence, walked and scored another run. Four hitter, senior first baseman Matt Brackett, went 3-5, with a double, two singles an RBI and two runs scored.

Huskies score early and often

Standish singled in the top of the first inning, stole second base, and scored on a hit by Brackett.
In the third inning Standish singled and stole second base again. Nappi walked and Brackett singled to load the bases. With two out and the bases loaded, Jones stepped to the plate and smashed a doubled. All three runners scored to give Mt. Hope a 4-0 lead.
In the fourth, senior centerfielder Dave Benevides singled, stole second base and scored on a triple by Standish.
In the fifth, sophomore catcher Matt Gale was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He reached second base on a single by Van Amberg. Junior left fielder Ryan Hopkins singled home Gale and Benevides singled home Van Amberg to make it 7-0.
In the sixth, Brackett doubled with one out. Went to second on force out, and scored on a single by Gale. Van Amberg walked giving the Huskies runners on first and second. Terceiro singled home Gale to give the Huskies a 9-0 lead. Nappi finished the scoring with his blast over the left field fence for a 10-0 lead.
Cameron Connor pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning, ending the game with two strke outs.

Next up: The Huskies play an away and home series against Juanita Sanchez. The opener is at Richardson field on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Mt. Hope hosts the Cavaliers on Monday at 4 p.m.
