Mt. Hope baseball and softball teams roll

Boys beat NK 4-2, girls crush NP 10-0

The Mt. Hope baseball team beat North kingstown 4-2 during a home game on Wednesday and the Huskies softball team crushed North Providence 10-0 at home on Thursday.

Offensively Brad Denson provided the power, smashing a 2 RBI triple to the left field gap and AJ Jones provided the pitching, striking out 6 and allowing just 1 hit, 3 walks, 3 hit batsmen and 2 runs. Ethan Santerre came on in relief and got the save allowing just a walk in 1-1/3 innings of work.

“It was a big win,” said head coach Mike Mazzarella. “They are back to back state champions. AJ righted the ship. The defense made enough plays to keep the game close. Brad had a huge hit for us with two outs. It catapulted us into the lead.”

Down 1-0, the Huskies broke out for 4 runs in the fourth inning. Danny Desilets reached on an error to lead off the inning. Parker Camelo (2 for 3) singled to give the Huskies runners at first and second. With one out, Jones singled to score Desilets. With runners at the corners, Jones stole second base to set the table for Denson. With two out, the big righty slammed a hit to the left field gap. Camelo and Jones easily scored. Denson ran the bases and ended up with a stand up triple. He ran home on a single by Rocco Ferolito to give Mt. Hope a 4-1 lead. That’s all Jones would need as he had his nasty fast ball and curve working to keep North Kingstown off balance. Mt. Hope is currently 2-3 in Division I as they lost to Cranston West 6-3 on Friday.

Amaral provides offense and pitching as softball team crushes North Providence 10-1

Senior Reily Amaral provided both pitching and offense as the Mt. Hope softball team crushed North Providence 10-0 during a league home game on Thursday afternoon. Amaral pitched a gem against North Providence, striking out 10 and scattering just 5 hits, allowing no walks and no runs. Offensively she belted 3 hits with 2 doubles, 3 RBI and 3 runs scored.

The Huskies smashed 10 hits and scored 1 run in the first inning, 3 in the second, 2 in the third, 2 in the fourth and 2 more in the sixth. Jada Allen smoked a 2 RBI single in the third inning. She scored both Amaral, who led off the inning with a double and Hailey Ferreira, who singled to left field. Sammy Malafronte and Ava Waddell each smashed two hits. Malafronte drove in a run and scored a run while Waddell scored 2 runs. Julia Allen singled and drove in a run and Elsa White also notched a hit, stole a base and scored a run. Mt. Hope is currently tied with East Greenwich for the top spot in Division II. Both teams have 5-1 records.

Next up:
