Mt. Hope nine beats West Warwick twice

The juggernaut Mt. Hope baseball team beat West Warwick twice last week, to improve their record to 11-1 in Division II. The Huskies won 4-2 in a close game at home on June 1st, and shut out the Wizards 4-0 on June 3rd, at McCarthy Field.

The Wizards scored their two runs on five hits, off Huskies starter, Matt Terceiro in the home game. Terceiro pitched three and two thirds innings and pounded the strike zone, with no strikeouts and one walk. Dayton VanAmberg relieved Terceiro in the fourth, and struck out Ty Condon to end the Wizards scoring threat. VanAmberg pitched two and one third innings with five strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore AJ Jones came out for the seventh and closed the game with two strike outs.
The Huskies manufactured their four runs managing just five hits against three West Warwick pitchers.
Cam Connor was hit by West Warwick pitcher, Ty Condon in the bottom of the first. The senior stole second base and scored on a single by Ryan Nappi, to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
Senior Andy Aubin led off the bottom of the second inning with a walk. Terceiro also walked to give Mt. Hope runners on first and second base with no outs. Centerfielder Dave Benevides tattooed a 1-1, pitch into the gap for an RBI double. Aubin scored from second base for a Huskies 2-0 lead, leaving Terceiro and Benevides on second and third. Lead off hitter, Jack Standish flied out to left for the second straight at bat. Connor walked loading the bases for Huskies’ sluggers Nappi and Matt Brackett. Condon got out of the inning without any further damage as Nappi hit a fly ball to left and Brackett popped up to first base, to end the inning.
West Warwick tied the game in the top of the fourth, getting two off Terceiro.
The Huskies won the game in the sixth scoring two more runs. Parker Camelo pinch hit for Jones who began to warm up to pitch the seventh. Camelo drew a one out walk. Aubin singled to give the the Huskies runners on first and third. Mt. Hope head coach Mike Mazzarella had VanAmberg bunt. Camelo scored on the play as Van Amberg’s bunt trickled out to West Warwick pitcher Quinn Kortick and he threw to first for the second out. Benevides stepped to the plate with Aubin still aboard and bashed his second RBI double of the game, scoring Aubin, to give the Huskies a 4-0 lead.
Jones struck out two, leaving one Wizard’s runner on base, to seal the deal for Mt. Hope.

Mt. Hope 4, West Warwick 0
In the second game at West Warwick’s McCarthy Field, Ethan Leary, Van Amberg and Jones combined to shut out West Warwick, 4-0. Leary a senior started the game and struck out five batters in four innings of work. Van Amberg pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning and Jones closed the game out, striking out two with one hit in two innings.
The Huskies scored two runs in the first inning, one in the fourth and one in the fifth. Standish in his comfortable two slot, went two for four, with two singles and a run scored. Nappi also went two for four, with two singles and a run scored. Connor back in the fifth spot, slugged a double and a single for 2 RBI. Van Amberg went one for one with an RBI single.

Mt. Hope also beat Tiverton, 5-1, in a non-league game over the weekend. Coach Mazzarella gave most starters a rest during the contest as the team gets ready for their last two league games, at Johnston on June 9th, and at home against Prout on June 11th at 3 p.m. Then playoffs.
