EAST PROVIDENCE — The Riverside Post 10 entry into the Rhode Island American Legion Baseball League Junior Division saw its summer come to an end last week with a best-of-three, quarterfinal playoff series loss to Post 86/14 (Cumberland-Lincoln).

The series began on a positive note for the locals, seeded third in the postseason. with a 6-4 victory Monday night, Aug. 2, at Pierce Field. Post 10 scored three times in the bottom of the first inning, then tacked on three more in the fourth after falling behind 4-3. Juriel Vargas scored on a wild pitch to put Riverside ahead for keeps in the fourth. John Vaughan drove in Aiden Greene with an insurance run later in the frame.

Tim Robitaille went the seven-inning distance on the mound for the locals, throwing 104 pitches in his complete game performed. He allowed 4 runs, 2 of which were earned, while scattering 8 hits, striking out 5 and walking 1 Post 14 batter. The visitors scored all 4 of their runs in the third and then shut down the remainder of the game.

Robitaille was aided by several outstanding defensive plays in the outfield by Steven Estrella in center and Ben Sherman in left, including a catch by Estrella in left center off the glove of a teammate.

Offensively, Brian Rutkowski, Post 10’s leadoff hitter, went 3-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Aiden Greene was 3-for-4, driving in two and scoring a run. Juriel Vargas had a RBI-double and scored twice. Oliver Andrews singled and scored. John Vaughan added a RBI-single.

Post 10 ventured to Lime Park Field in Lincoln Tuesday night, Aug. 3, with a chance to sweep the series and advance to the semifinals, but host sixth-seeded Post 86/14 thwarted the attempt with a decisive 9-0 win.

The winner-take-all third game was played the following night, August 4, back at Pierce Field where the visitors completed their comeback. Post 86/14 defeated Post 10 by an 8-3 score to win the series, 2-1.

Post 86/14 scored four times in the top of the first inning to take early control of the contest en route to the victory.

Post 10 finished its season with an overall record of 10-6 in league games.
