Sharon Frances McCanna, 73, of Warren, passed away on Saturday, March 27, 2021 in the home she loved. She was the daughter of the late James R. and Florence (Chapman) McCanna Jr. She is survived by her devoted sister,
Mary Ellen McCanna, whose constant hovering drove her to distraction. She is also survived by a brother, James McCanna III, also of Warren.
Sharon was the cherished aunt of Kyle J. Smith (Angela McKane) of Colorado. She is also survived by her much-loved cousin, Ellen N. Breen (William Clogher) of Attleboro, and an amazing group of friends whose love and support was steadfast. She was predeceased by many beloved relatives.
Sharon taught third grade at St. Philomena School in Portsmouth, where she inspired the minds and touched the hearts of her students. To quote a colleague, “Sharon was a much-loved member of the faculty for more than 30 years. She loved teaching and her students. Her real strength was in understanding each child’s gifts.”
Sharon loved family, friends, having her feet in the sand at Second Beach, ice cream and the Rolling Stones, not necessarily in that order. In the summer of 2019, while she was receiving chemotherapy, which left her tired and weak, she mustered her strength to attend a Stones concert at Foxborough Stadium. Strong-willed and fiercely determined, it’s difficult to speak of her in the past tense. May her memory be cherished.
Calling hours and flowers are respectfully omitted.
A memorial service will be held at a later date, to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her name to McAuley Ministries, PO Box 73195, Providence, RI 02907, or any charitable organization endeavoring to assist and educate children.
Arrangements by Smith Funeral and Memorial Services, Warren.
