Huskies beat Bayview, lose to Barrington, Portsmouth and Tiverton

The Mt. Hope golf team beat St. Mary’s Bayview, but fell to Barrington, Portsmouth and Tiverton in their first two matches of the season on Tuesday and Wednesday. The youthful Huskies sport four freshmen in the top five golfers.

Ben Peters, Jackson Howland, Luke Donina and Ayden Sheedy. Sophomore Quinn Frawley and junior Riley Howland are also in the mix. Peters, the Huskies most experienced golfer, shot a 51 at the Donald Ross designed Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington on Tuesday and a 54 at Green Valley in Portsmouth on Wednesday.

“Ben has a little tournament experience,” said Huskies head coach Wayne Lima. “Our other golfers have played but received no formal instruction.  Myself and assistance coach Nolan Ross, have been focusing on the kinesthetic movement of the swing and have emphasized the short game—chipping, pitching, and putting.”

Jackson Howland shot a 56 at RICC and a 56 at Green Valley. Sheedy shot a 57 at RICC. Donina shot a 56 at Green Valley. Frawley shot a 57 at RICC and a 53 at Green Valley. The Huskies totaled a team score of 221 at both courses.

Riley Howland, the Huskies quarterback on the football team, is trying golf with his younger brother Jackson this season. While he made some quality shots at RICC and Green Valley, he has to work on his short game to bring down his overall score.

The Huskies are competing in one big division this season according to Coach Lima. They will play local teams and courses. Results and state rankings will determine who makes the playoffs.

“For their first competitive match ever, I was pleased with the outcome,” said Coach Lima. “They were good performances. The team is working hard and the future looks bright for the Mt. Hope golf team.”
