WARREN —  Warren public safety personnel responded to a gas leak on Main Street early Wednesday morning, Sept. 25, after a workers accidentally struck a gas line during a construction project.

The Warren Police and Fire Departments were called to the scene at approximately 8:41 a.m., according to WFD Chief James Sousa.

“We checked gas readings in all neighboring households. No leakages were found,” he said.

The workers who hit the gas service line were subcontracting on the project being conducted by the Bristol County Water Authority.
Rhode Island Energy was called to the scene to shut down the leak. Fire and police officials secured the location.

Traffic along Main Street by the intersection of Broad Street was briefly closed down to one lane before repair work was completed in the area, according to WPD Chief Roy Borges.

Reached for comment later in the day, BCWA Executive Director Steve Couto explained the contractor, Dewcon, "was in the process of rehabbing a water service and struck an unmarked gas service line" and that the local authorities "responded accordingly."
