It was a wondrous afternoon for members of the Warren Senior Center and Corliss Center, whose combined efforts at the first annual Fashion Show was truly something to behold.
An appreciative audience was on hand as Warren Senior Center and Corliss Center “models” strutted their stuff down the red carpet last Thursday afternoon, March 6.
“What a memorable day at the Warren Senior Center,” echoed Senior Center executive director Kyra Little. Little continued, “Today, we celebrated beauty, confidence, and style with a fashion show. We had the pleasure of seeing members from the Warren Senior Center and the Corliss Center as models in the show.
"Each participant radiated pure joy, proving that fashion is for everyone, regardless of age or ability. Each participant either made or chose their own outfits to display on the red-carpet runway.
"Everyone who came had an amazing time as the feeling of belonging and camaraderie was visibly displayed."
Some who attended even went so far as to learn something to make the experience that much more enjoyable for the participants.
"We had people from our center learning sign language to cheer on fellow models and our audience members clapping, offering high fives, and giving a deaf applause," Little added.
"My heart is so full of gratitude for a center filled with people with smiles on their faces, joy in their hearts, and ...a runway beneath their feet, proving that true beauty shines from within," she concluded.
Minutes before the show got underway, Senior Center models were seen backstage prepping for the big event. Said Paula Cricket Rezendes, an active Warren Senior Center member throughout the year,
“I’ve modeled before, and I love doing this.” “I am a flirt,” said Mary E. Maitland, who can be seen perusing the spacious Senior Center regularly.”When it comes to something like this, I love showing off.”
And then there’s the always-smiling Jan Whitmore, who was quite honest in her assessment of the situation.
“I love it here at the Senior Center,” Whitmore said. “I love helping people and I love fashion. I used to make my own clothes.”
Show ceremonies were under the direction of Bunmi Osho, Corliss program manager.
“We do this for our members. We come here to do some of the activities with the seniors. This is something we can do together. I’m happy this is all taking place here and the two agencies are doing something together," said Osho.
For Helene Brisson, it was a little more personal.
“I’m excited. I used to live next door to Corliss, and I’m doing this today in remembrance of my friend,” said Brisson.
All in all, it was a day that everyone went home happy and full of pride with the way this program was conducted.
And, as someone was overheard saying, “I can’t wait till the next fashion show!”
