A Fall River woman faces numerous charges after she led Westport police on a chase Thursday morning that only ended after officers laid down stop sticks and deflated all four of her tires.
Tracy Furtado, no age given, of Fall River, was charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, using a motor vehicle without authority, driving without a license and assault with a dangerous weapon (the car), following the chase. It began at approximately 9:30 a.m., when Westport police received a report of a red Chrysler Sebring driving erratically on Route 88.
Officer Kyle Fernandes spotted the car as it passed through the intersection of Route 88 and Hix Bridge Road, driving 60 miles per hour in the breakdown lane. He attempted to stop her, but police said Ms. Furtado failed to stop and continued south on Route 88, eventually driving onto Gooseberry Island.
Officers Todd Oliver and Scott Davis pursued Ms. Furtado onto the island, and Det. Sergeant Bryan McCarthy said that "with nowhere to go, the vehicle turned around and headed back towards Route 88, almost striking Officer Davis's cruiser."
Officer Fernandes deployed stop sticks on East Beach Road. With all four tires deflated, the car came to a stop and Ms. Furtado was placed under arrest. She was arraigned in the Fall River Justice Center.
