Holbrook scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to overpower the Westport girls' basketball team 42-31 during a Mayflower Athletic Conference home game on Friday night. The loss drops the Wildcats record to 5-2 and 1-1 in the MAC.
Seniors Jessica George and Jenna Egbe fueled the Wildcats to early lead. George buried a pair of 3-pointers and Egbe scored 7 points from the paint as Westport ran out to leads of 13-2 in the first quarter and 21-7 at halftime. Tess Silvia also drained a 3-pointer, Zoe Sylvain scored 3 points, Kylie Hazel scored 2.
Westport took their foot off the pedal in the second half and slowed down the game pace, settling into a half-court offense and defense instead of their frantic full-court press-transition game, that had won them five straight.
Holbrook took the gift and started a comeback in the third quarter, scoring 7 points to cut the lead to 25-14.
The Bulldogs stiffened their defense, forced turnovers and scored 28 fourth-quarter points to overtake the Wildcats. Freshman guard Janiyah Smith heated up, drained three 3-pointers and scored all 18 of her points the second half. Bulldogs junior Ashya Dingle scored 11 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter.
Westport’s outside shooting became ice cold. The Wildcats began to force the ball into the paint to Egbe, who muscled her way to the hoop to score 6 of her team high 13 points in the fourth quarter. George, who didn’t play in the third quarter, came back on the court in the fourth, but it was all too late. The Wildcats had lost their momentum and had handed it to Holbrook.
