I am pleased to share an update regarding the future of Westport’s municipal buildings. This week, the Westport Select Board is set to approve a contract with RGB Architects, Inc. for a comprehensive ‘Town of Westport Facilities Feasibility Study.’ This pivotal project, funded through the 2023 Town Meeting appropriation, represents a significant step toward ensuring thoughtful, informed decisions about the future of our municipal facilities.

While past studies have explored potential reuse options for the old Westport High School building, this study will aim to provide the "missing piece": A thorough evaluation of multiple town buildings, including town hall, the town hall annex, and the council on aging. It will allow for a true, comprehensive cost-benefit analysis of reusing the high school building versus continuing upkeep and repairs to existing facilities.

It is important to recognize that any decision, whether it involves reusing the high school, maintaining existing facilities, or even demolition, will involve costs. Towns across Massachusetts have faced similar challenges, and some have successfully transformed old school buildings into valuable municipal spaces. This study will provide the select board, town administration, and taxpayers with the clarity needed to make a well-informed decision about the best path forward.

I want to thank the members of the Westport Long Term Building Committee, the town administrator, and the select board for their work in making this initiative a reality. I would also like to extend my gratitude to the dedicated residents of Westport who continue to provide insight and offer thoughtful suggestions regarding the old high school building. No matter what the end result, Westport’s future is brighter when we make decisions grounded in thorough research and community collaboration. I am optimistic about what this study will reveal, and look forward to providing more updates as the study proceeds.
