Merton Alan Petty, 87, of Westport, passed away at home on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 as a result of Covid-19.  He was the husband of Pauline (Briggs) Petty; they were married for 56 years.

Born and raised in Little Compton, RI, he was son of the late Nellie (Airey) and Merton L. Petty.

Mr. Petty was a proud veteran of the Korean War, serving as a radio operator in the United States Air Force. He worked for Digital Equipment Corporation and Sylvania as a manager for many years.

Fishing was his passion and for that reason he established and managed Westport Marine Specialties for many years before retiring.

Including his wife, survivors include four sons: Mark Petty of New Hampshire, David Petty of New Hampshire, Mitchell Petty of Billerica, Mass., and Lee Petty of Easton, Mass.; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Honoring his wishes, viewing is omitted and private services will be held under the direction of the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Road, Westport.

Expressions of sympathy in Al's memory may be made to: Veterans Northeast Outreach Center (VNEOC), 10 Reed St., Haverhill, MA 01832.  www.vneoc.org/housing

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
