After a long battle with asbestos lung disease, Rene Raymond Parent (“Cap”) of Westport passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving and caring family on May 4, 2022. Survived by his wife of 50 years, Claire (Plante) Parent; their children, Pamela (Parent) Melanson of Westport, Raymond Parent and his wife Stacey (Lepage) Parent of Westport, and Nicole (Parent) Marino and her husband, Kevin of Westport.

He was blessed with three amazing grandkids, Raymond J. Parent, Reagan J. Parent and Lily E. Mercer. Cap is also survived by his two sisters, Denise (Parent) Harvey and her late husband, Willie Harvey of Mississippi, and Susan (Parent) Sherman and her husband Denis of Fall River. Rene had a great love for all his nephews, nieces, and numerous cousins from Massachusetts to California.

Rene is predeceased by his loving parents, Rene E. Parent, Evelyn (Vieira) Parent, and Jeanne (Brunelle)Parent, all of Westport.

Rene served in the U.S. Navy from 1968 to 1998 and retired honorably as a Master Chief. In his 30 years, he served as a Steelworker with NMCB 10, 12, and 27. His service brought him to various places around the country and many parts of the world. A combat Vietnam Vet, he was a lifelong member of the VFW, where he recently earned the title of Sr. Vice Commander of Westport Post 8502.

Cap is locally known by friends and family for his love of boat and car racing, hunting, ATV riding, old hot rod cars, skiing, fishing, and quahogging the Westport River wtih countless friends and family. If you knew Cap, you know you had a lifelong and legendary friend, many who had the opportunity to enjoy his famous clamboils, chowder, or chow mein … all of which was washed down with a Miller High Life!

Rene R. Parent was laid to his eternal rest alongside his parents on Monday, May 9, at Notre Dame Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Westport VFW, PO Box 1498 Westport, MA 02790.
