Westport bashes 20 runs in drubbing of Upper Cape

Wildcats Start season, 2-0

The Westport High School baseball team clobbered Upper Cape Cod RVT, 20-6, in a home game on sunny and dry, Thursday afternoon. The win gives the team a 2-0 record in the MAC, after they beat up on Tri-County RVT in similar fashion with their mighty bats, 17-2, in an away game on Tuesday. The Wildcats play a quick ten game schedule due to Covid.

Against Upper Cape, The Wildcats scored eleven runs in the second inning and three in the first, three in the third and three more in the fourth. Senior, Cameron Simonin, the team’s five hitter, led the Westport attack, bashing three hits with a triple, four RBI and two runs scored.

“Cameron hits for power and runs well,” said Wildcats head coach Jason Pacheco. “We have to put the ball in play and use our team’s speed to stretch extra base hits and put pressure on our opponents.”

The top of the order did the bulk of the damage smacking eleven hits and scoring 13 runs.

One hitter, sophomore Noah Sowle, went two for four with a double, two RBI and three runs scored. Two hitter, junior Nick Arruda, went three for four with a double, two RBI and three runs scored. Three hitter, sophomore Max Morotti, went one for two, with two walks, an RBI and two runs scored. Four hitter, eighth grader Matt Burt, went two for three with a triple and three runs scored.

Morotti, the Wildcats’ pitcher, struck out six, walked two and gave up seven hits for six runs in four innings of work. Upper Case scored three off him in the first. But in the bottom of the inning, Westport eighth grade second baseman Connor James got them all back with one swing of the bat. With Arruda, Burt and Simonin on base, the burly James smacked a towering shot over the head of the Upper Case left fielder, scoring all three runs, as he slid into third base with a triple. Had there been a fence, the ball easily would have sailed over it for a home run.

Morotti and the Wildcats defense settled the rest of the way and in the second inning and then, the onslaught began.

Sophomore centerfielder Cameron Leary singled to lead off the inning. Eight grader Justin Cleaves reached on an error. Sowle singled to load the bases. Arruda singled scoring Leary. Morotti walked loading the bases, again. Burt singled home Cleaves. Simonin singled home Sowle and Arruda. And the inning just kept going. After the dust cleared, the Wildcats had scored eleven runs on five hits and six walks.

This team is very young and raw, but has a ton of talent,” Coach Pacheco said. “We work on the approach to hitting everyday, and playing team baseball. If our pitchers throw strikes and we play sound defense, we will be a solid team.”

The Wildcats infield consists of Simonin at first base, Arruda at second, James at third base, Sowle at shortstop and sophomore Noah Lacey, behind the plate. Morotti the team’s top pitcher, also plays third base, when he is not on the mound.

“Max throws the ball well and has a good repertoire of pitches,” Coach Pacheco said. “Offensively, he has a great eye and always puts the bat on the ball.”

In the outfield, Cleaves played left field, Leary played center, and Sam Perry played right field for the Wildcats.
