The Westport girls' basketball team used strong shooting and defense to crush Neighborhood House Charter School 46-23 in a Division 5 round of 32 home game on Thursday night. The 15-6 Wildcats move on to face Hoosac Valley tonight, Monday, at 5 p.m.
“We played great. I’m excited. I think we’ll go far,” said senior co-captain Zoey Sylvain. “We started out super strong like we needed to. Still it’s sad that this is the last time ever that us seniors will play on our home court.”
Westport started the game red hot, scoring 21 first quarter points and established a strong inside presence with center Jenna Egbe and forward Skylar Rezendes, who combined for 25 rebounds.
Rezendes, a sophomore, scored 9 of her game high 15 points driving to the basket in the first quarter. She also pulled down 12 rebounds, made two steals, 2 assists and a block. Egbe, a senior, scored 11 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and made 4 blocks, a steal and an assist.
“We prepared well for this game and our four seniors led the way from the start,” said head coach Jen Gargiulo. “We knew if we set the tone, put our press on that our defense would translate into offensive opportunities.”
The Wildcats guards caused havoc combining for 6 steals and 3 blocks, while working out of a full court press to start the game. They combined for five 3-pointers, offensively. Sylvain, who got to the court early to take extra shooting practice, sank a pair of 3-pointers and added a free throw for 7 points.
“I was shooting around for about an hour and a half,” she said. “I felt good today.”
Senior Julia George drained a 3-pointer and a jumper for 5 points. George also dished out 6 assists and made 5 rebounds and 2 blocks. Senior Tess Silvia and Kylie Hazel each buried 3-pointers and Jenna George added a jumper.
Westport led 21-6 after the first quarter, 31-11 at halftime and 41-17 after the third quarter.
Our starting lineup was pretty new at the beginning of the season,” Coach Gargiulo said. We had some growing pains when Skyler went down, but I think, right now, we're hitting our stride. Everybody's working hard and they're all playing for each other and that's what we preach.”
