The Westport soccer team stopped a two game skid and shutout Bristol-Plymouth RVT, 4-0, during a non-league game at Westport on Wednesday. Senior midfielder Lily Pichette scored the team’s first goal of the season at 23:40 in the first half and added two assists to lead the team in scoring.

“Lily Pichette was outstanding today,” said Westport head coach Gary Muello. “She finds that pocket of space behind my center forward and distributes the ball really well. She has a good shot, too and works really hard.”

Senior back Abigail Silvia scored two minutes later to give Westport a, 2-0 lead. Her goal was assisted by senior forward, Alora Defonseca. Senior midfielder Jessie Skov scored at 39:59 in the first half, to give the Wildcats a, 3-0 lead and senior midfielder Laura Martel scored in the second half at 49 minutes, to extend the lead to, 4-0. Pichette assisted on both goals.

“This was a good match up for us,” said Coach Muello. “We’ve had trouble finishing the last two games. Today we were able to finish and it was good to have that.”

The Wildcats began the young season, 0-2, with back to back, 1-0, loses to Joseph Case High School and Tri-County RVT.

“We have really good team chemistry,” said Wildcats captain Alora Defonseca. “The seniors have been together since seventh grade. We’ve been playing well and connecting with the younger girls. Losing two games in a row aggravated us. We want to have a good season, because it’s our last season. We want to play well and go to states.”

“The girls have been playing awesome. I just kept telling them, you play that way and things are going to turn around for you,” said Coach Muello, who was unable to coach the team last season due to health issues.

“I’m so excited to be back with the girls. I had a little health thing and now I’m back and feeling great,” Coach Muello said. “This is my pride and joy right here.”

“We’ve played with coach Gary since seventh grade. We are used to having him around. It makes the team feel more, together.”

Assistant coach, Sheldon Thibodeau, kept the torch burning for Coach Muello last season, in their Covid shortened Fall-II season. The team had a one game playoff at the end of the season.

Seven seniors

This season the Wildcats boasts seven seniors, many that started their careers as seventh graders. “I’ve had them for five or six years,” said Coach Muello. Alora Defonseca got the nod to captain the team and Coach Muello made the remaining seniors, assistant captains. “Alora is a great leader. She speaks up and her and I get along really well which is nice to have relationship between the coach and the captain. And she’s great with the girls. The other seniors have stepped up and have been leaders in their own ways,” said Coach Muello. “I’ve been fortunate with the girls.”

Practice

The team has been working on conditioning, short yardage sprinting, passing and maintaining possession. “It’s really paying off,” Coach Muello said. The defense has been tough with only two goals scored in three games for eight grade goalkeeper Abigail Krzyszton, who got her first shutout on Wednesday, with the help of senior center back Naomi Cass and freshman Tess Silvia. “Naomi leads by example,” Coach Muello said. “She controls the ball, makes good decisions and makes good tackles. She’s not the biggest of girls,” said Coach Muello. “But they are both athletic.”

The team boasts two of the best midfielders in the league in seniors Laura Martel and Jesse Skov. Martel, more is more of a holding mid compliments Skov who likes to attack. “They can control the game,” said Coach Muello. “They work well together and lead by example. They both scored goals today, which is really nice.”

Making the tournament

Making the tournament would be good for us as one of our last games together. Every time that we’ve made the tournament we haven’t done so well. If we make it this year, I feel that we’ll do pretty well. We have a really strong team,” said Defonseca.
