The Westport baseball team clobbered Bishop Connolly 11-1 in their home opener on Tuesday afternoon. It was the Wildcats first win of the season as they improved their record to 1-2 after two road loses to Case 0-11 and West Bridgewater 6-5.

Wildcats starting pitcher Cam Leary struck out seven and gave up just one hit and a run in five innings of work. The junior had trouble finding the plate in the first inning. He walked three batters, gave up a hit and walked in a run before settling down to get out of the inning. He set the Cougars down 1-2-3 in the second and fifth innings.

“It was a close game heading into the fifth,” said head coach Jason Pacheco, “But our bats woke up and broke open the game.”

The Wildcats tied the game in the bottom of the second inning, took the lead in the fourth and broke the game open in the fifth. Westport bashed seven hits and scored eight runs with two outs as the team took a 10-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth.

Junior outfielder Ben Boudria hitting ninth in the lineup, powered the Westport offense. The junior outfielder bashed three hits with a double and drove in four runs. Leary smacked three hits and scored three runs. Max Morotti had a pair of hits and scored 2 runs and Noah Sowle (2 for 3) hit a triple, with an RBI and a run scored.

Leary tied the game

Leary tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second. Luke Finglas led off the inning with a hit. Leary followed and singled to left centerfield, giving the Wildcats runners at first and second with no outs. Coach Pacheco flashed Will Sousa the sign to bunt. Sousa attempted to bunt a high pitch from Connolly pitcher Connor Travis. The bunt blooped right back to Travis and he wheeled and caught Finglas off second base for a double play. With Leary still on first base, Boudria stepped to the plate and laced a double to right centerfield. Leary running on the hit, rounded third, headed for home and beat the throw to tie the game 1-1.

The pitcher scored again in the fourth inning after gaining second base by hitting a one out double. He moved to third when Sousa grounded out to shortstop and scored on a Boudria base hit to give Westport a 2-1 lead.

Morotti singled to lead off the fifth inning. Connor James struck out, Shawn Lavoie flew out to right and with two out the flood gates opened for the Wildcats. Finglas and Leary singled to load the bases. Nick Arruda batting for Sousa, drew a walk to score Morotti to give Westport a 3-1 lead.

Boudria singled home Finglas and Leary to give Westport a 5-1 lead. Sowle unleashed a triple to score Arruda and Boudria to make it 7-1. Chris Wilson hitting for Dylan Kirby, singled home Sowle. Morotti singled for the second time in the inning to give Westport runners at first and second. James, the clean up hitter, didn’t let his second chance with runners on go to waste and he bashed a double to clear the bases and give the Wildcats a 10-1 lead.

Shawn Lavoie pitched a scoreless sixth inning in relief of Leary.

Arruda hit a two out double in the bottom of the sixth. Michael DeGagne hitting for Boudria, singled home Arruda and ended the game under the ten run rule with his fourth RBI of the game.
