Westport police logs: Multiple charges filed following accident

Monday, May 22

A caller from Howland Road complained of noise at 6:12 a.m.

A Sanford Road resident called in a suspicious car at 8:39 a.m.

A Reed Road resident reported the violation of a restraining order at 11:42 a.m.

A Robert Street caller complained of identity fraud at 3:44 p.m.

A 911 caller reported an accident with injuries on State Road at 4:34 p.m. Another accident, with no injuries reported, was called in from Old County Road at 7:28 p.m. A third accident called in via 911 from American Legion Highway at 8:36 p.m. led to the arrest of a New Bedford man. Durval M. Bento, 41, of 66 Acorn St., was charged wtih operating under the influence of drugs, second offense, possession of a Class A controlled substance, driving on a revoked license and negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and was cited for a marked lane violation.

Police pulled over six vehicles and issued two citations over the course of the day.

Tuesday, May 23

A 911 caller reported an accident at Sodom Road and Narrow Avenue just after 6 a.m. Another was called in from Route 195 just before 6:30 a.m., and a third from Daisy Lane at 8:52 a.m.

A Main Road caller asked police to keep the peace at 9:19 a.m.

A State Road resident complained of larceny, forgery or fraud at 11:49 a.m.

Police investigated the possible violation of a restraining order on Old County Road at 7:33 p.m.

A 911 call for a motor vehicle violation on American Legion Highway led to the arrest of a local man at 8:57 p.m. Clifford John Reed, 40, of 451 Briggs Road, was charged with operating under the influence of liquor, and cited for the negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

A caller reported a motor vehicle violation on State Road at 9:11 p.m.

Police pulled over three vehicles and issued two citations over the course of the day.

Wednesday, May 24

Police arrested Robert James DeMello, 28, of 1143 Horseneck Road, at 8:11 a.m. on an unspecified warrant.

A Main Road resident reported a civil dispute at 1:18 p.m.

Police deemed unfounded a report of a motor vehicle violation called in from American Legion Highway shortly before 1:30 p.m.

An Old Bedford Road caller reported vandalism at 3:52 p.m.

Police assisted a motorist after receiving a 911 call regarding a disabled vehicle on Route 88, near Hix Bridge Road, at 4:31 p.m.

Police pulled over 15 vehicles and issued 13 citations over the course of the day.

Thursday, May 25

A Lepire Avenue resident called in an animal complaint at 7:14 a.m.

A Conserve Avenue resident asked police to keep the peace at 12:52 p.m.

A Highland Avenue resident reported identity fraud at 2:09 p.m.

A 911 caller reported a motor vehicle violation on Melissa Beth Way at 3:47 p.m. Another was called in from American Legion Highway at 4:22 p.m., and a third on Route 195 17 minutes later.

A caller reported a fire on Gifford Road at 3:50 p.m.

A caller reported a suspicious vehicle on Reed Road at 9:39 a.m.; suspicious activity was reported 33 minutes later on Adamsville Road.

Police pulled over five vehicles and issued three citations over the course of the day.

Friday, May 26

A caller from Beechwood Drive asked police to keep the peace at 1:21 p.m.

A 911 caller from John Reed Road filed an animal complaint just after 2 p.m.

A caller complained of a suspicious person on Tickle Road at 2:54 p.m.

A 911 caller from State Road reported a motor vehicle violation at 3:23 p.m. A similar 911 call came in from Route 88 at 6:32 p.m.

A 911 caller reported an accident with injuries on Main Road at 3:59 p.m. A similar 911 call came in from Route 88 at 5:54 p.m.

A disturbance on Beechwood Drive was called in via 911 at 4:18 p.m.

Police pulled over three vehicles but issued no citations over the course of the day.

Saturday, May 27

A Drift Road resident complained of threats just before 10 a.m.

An Old Bedford Road caller reported a neighbor dispute at 11:19 a.m.

A caller alerted police to a road hazard on Route 88 at 12:52 p.m.

A 911 caller reported an accident on State Road at 1:07 p.m. A second, with injuries, was reported on State Road at 1:12 p.m., and a car fire report came in from Route 195 at 1:25 p.m.

Police received two 911 calls regarding a road hazard on Route 195, at 2:31 p.m. and 2:39 p.m.

Police pulled over one vehicle but issued no citations over the course of the day.

Sunday, May 28

A Kyle Jacob Road resident lodged a noise complaint just after 2 a.m.

Parking enforcement officers issued citations on East Beach Road and Atlantic Avenue, both at 10:27 a.m.

A Tickle Road caller reported a neighbor dispute at 12:28 p.m.

Police pulled over four vehicles and issued three citations over the course of the day.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far.
