Sure, he walked away with two gold medals. But Westport swimmer Brandon Medeiros’s main goal was to beat his team’s record, and he pulled off the feat at the recent State Games of America national swimming competition held late last month in San Diego, Ca.
Medeiros, 17, an incoming senior at Westport High School and the son of Erika and Josh Medeiros, swims for the New Bedford YMCA and attended the recent games in California after winning the Bay State Games last June. The California event was only open to state title winners from the previous year.
Competing against other champions from across the country, Medeiros earned two gold medals in the breaststroke (short and long courses) and also accomplished his goal of taking his team’s record in the 100-yard (short) breaststroke. His final time of 1:02:4 was good enough to beat the old record, set in 2010, by nearly half a second.
Brandon singled out his coach Brett Pacheco for his work before the championships, saying he put in a lot of extra time and effort getting him ready, and he couldn’t have done it without him.
