Westport wallops Bristol Plymouth 3-0 on senior night

The Westport volleyball team walloped Bristol Plymouth 3-0 in front of a large senior night crowd at the new middle/high school on Wednesday night. The win boosted the Wildcats overall record to 11-7 and 5-3 in the Mayflower Athletic Conference. Hannah Therrien, a back row specialist, led the way with her big right-handed serve.  The junior tallied 20 service points during the match. In the second set she ran off a stretch of 15 in a row. “Hannah is a spark plug with a very consistent serve,” said head coach Monique Jones. “She has definitely pulled us through some jams this season.”

Seniors Taylor Perry and Kyleigh Finglas played brilliantly from start to finish. Perry the team’s setter, dished out 16 assists, and had three service points and two aces. Finglas led the team with nine kills and now has 568 for the season. She also collected seven service points and an ace.

Junior Zoey Sylvain protected the net well in the first set and made several key plays to keep the Wildcats on track. She blocked a shot and blasted a spike for points and saved the Wildcats several times by keeping volleys alive. She also tallied six service points and four aces. “Zoey made several nice plays at middle hitter,” said Coach Jones.  The Wildcats will learn their playoff fate on Halloween night according to Coach Jones.

Senior night

Before the game Coach Jones spoke about her seniors, Vitoria Rodrigues, Mikhaela Rego, Braylin Montigny, Taylor Perry and Kyleigh Finglas, as they promenaded from their bench to the foot of the full bleachers to give flowers to family members.

Coach Jones deemed Rodrigues a selfless player and the team’s biggest cheerleader. “She is constantly asking how she can improve herself to help the team,” she said.

Coach Jones has been coaching Rego since eighth grade. “I’ve been fortunate to watch her grow as a player and a person. Mikhaela can play any position on the court,” she said.

She said Montigny is fierce and fearless. “Braylin is the core of the team in the way she encourages her teammates," Coach Jones said. "She always works so hard in everything that she does.”

Coach Jones heralded Perry for stepping up to play setter this season. “Taylor is an outstanding player and has perservered this season,” she said.

“Kyleigh is a natural born leader,” Coach Jones said of Finglas. “She demonstrated immense skill as an eighth grader. She was named a captain her freshman year and has held that leading position since.”
