Commissioner grants waiver to Sowams School following flood

Posted

Sowams School students received a bit of good news on Friday morning.

According to an email from the superintendent, students at the school will not need to make up days missed following a flood inside the building earlier this year.

Barrington schools earn national recognition.

"As a result of the water leak that occurred at Sowams School on Aug. 29, I requested a waiver from Rhode Island Department of Education Commissioner Kenneth Wagner for permission to not make up the cancelled school days that occurred on Aug. 30 to Sept. 1," wrote Barrington Superintendent of Schools Michael Messore.

"Due to the unusual circumstances of a flood, after reviewing our request, Commissioner Wagner has granted the waiver. The last day of school for Sowams School will be the same as all schools in our district. As of today, the last day of school is June 20, 2017."

Students, teachers and administrators were welcomed back to school on Aug. 29 by some flooded classrooms and hallways. Officials said the flood occurred when a water line inside a janitor's closet broke; the leak started at some point during the weekend prior to the start of school.

On Monday, Aug. 29, Sowams School teachers and administrators coped with the flood — teachers whose rooms were flooded moved their classes into the cafeteria, the library or outdoors; and a team of custodians from across the district went to work cleaning up the mess.

The school district's insurer examined the flood and determined the building needed to be closed and repairs made, so officials canceled classes from Aug. 30 to Sept. 1.

Crews worked overtime to repair the building and students were welcomed back to class on Sept. 6, following the Labor Day holiday.
