Dorothy A. Negro, 89, Bristol

Mrs. Dorothy A. (Estrella) Negro, 89, of Greylock Road, Bristol, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017 at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of Joseph F. Negro, her husband of 61 years. 

Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, she was a daughter of the late Joseph S. and Virginia (Costa) Estrella. Dorothy was a graduate of Colt Memorial High School, Bristol, class of 1945. She was an administrative assistant for a number of years at the Visiting Nurse Services of RI in the Warren office until her retirement. She previously worked in the office of the former US Rubber Co., Collins and Aikman Co., and RICO Machinery, and was a teacher’s aide for the Bristol School System for several years. 

Dorothy was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Bristol, and enjoyed cooking, especially for family Sunday dinners.

In addition to her husband, she leaves three children, Joseph Negro (the late Maria) of Bristol, Virginia Allen (David) of Port Saint Lucie, Fla., and Richard Negro (Melissa) of Franklin, Mass.; seven grandchildren, Chad Lambert, Kelly Allen-Kujawski, Michelle Negro, Faith Negro, Allison Sullivan, Agnes and Vanessa Negro; three great grandchildren, Bennett Bush, Ethan and Nora Kujawski; and a sister, Ernestine Lopes of Bristol. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Isabelle Velleca, Mary Navach Mooney and Angelina Celone; and a brother, Louis Estrella. 

Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood St., Bristol, are Friday, Feb. 3, 2017 at 10 a.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State St., Bristol. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. Visiting hours, Thursday, Feb. 2, 6-8 p.m.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
