Bell Tower Plaza evacuated after roof collapses

Posted

Bristol police and fire, as well as National Grid crews are at the site of Bell Tower Plaza where a roof collapse caused the evacuation of the Metacom Avenue strip mall.

At around 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, emergency crews responded to the area where one of the businesses reported the collapse.

Emergency crews evacuated people from all the buildings and cordoned the area off until the extent of the damage can be assessed.

By 3 p.m., most businesses were allowed to operate, though several — including Orange Leaf, Liberty Tax Service, Hair Expertise Verizon and Devine & Associates — remained cordoned off.

No injuries were reported in the collapse and the extent of the damage is still being investigated. It is believed that the excessive weight of melting ice and snow caused the collapse.
