Man sent to ACI after attacking two men with baseball bat

Posted

A 25-year-old man was arrested in Bristol and sent to the ACI for allegedly striking two men repeatedly with a baseball bat earlier this month. Matthew Achorn, 25, of Providence, was taken into custody on Monday, Jan. 20, after officers were called to an apartment at 2 Chilton St. at 11 a.m.

When they arrived, Patrolmen Kevin Moran and George Lefebvre found a woman and Mr. Achorn at the house. Apparently the landlord, who was not there at the time, had called police to request that Mr. Achorn be removed from the residence, though the woman who lives in the Chilton Street home did not have any problem with Mr. Achorn being there.

However, the officers learned there was an active warrant for his arrest and brought Mr. Achorn to the station. The warrant stemmed from an incident a week earlier in the same apartment.

At approximately 7:45 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13, officers were called to the area of Franklin and Chilton streets because a caller reported seeing a man chasing two other men down the street while brandishing a baseball bat. By the time Patrol Officer Rachel Gaffney arrived, the men had all fled the scene, though officers picked up one of the men, a 27-year-old from Warren who was later arrested for possession of narcotics.

During her investigation of what had happened inside the apartment, Officer Gaffney learned that Mr. Achorn and the woman were inside the Chilton Street apartment when two men came to hang out. Shortly after the two other men arrived, Mr. Achorn allegedly became enraged when he saw one of the men groping the woman in the living room. Mr. Achorn allegedly grabbed a baseball bat and began hitting the man several times, striking him in the arm, leg and shin. The other visitor was in a bathroom at the time, heard the commotion and came running out to see what was happening. When Mr. Achorn saw him, he allegedly began swinging at the second man, too, missing multiple times but striking him on his arm and in his ribs.

Both men the fled from the apartment, with Mr. Achorn in pursuit. Officers attempted to find the alleged assailant that night but could not locate him.

After taking Mr. Achorn into custody on Jan. 20, officers charged him with two counts of felony assault and vandalism (one man’s cell phone was broken during the attack). He was arraigned by a justice of the peace at the station. Bristol Police contacted the Attorney General’s Office, who directed them to take Mr. Achorn to the ACI for violating probation on previous charges.

Mr. Achorn was arrested by Barrington Police multiple times from 2017 to 2019, with charges including domestic disorderly conduct, DUI and possession of controlled substances.
