Marilyn Kay Herreshoff, née Olson died Feb. 19, 2019, following a brief illness. Kay, as she was known to all was born in Petoskey, Mich, was the daughter of Alfred J. Olson and Marie L. Beard Olson. She was the sister of Warren Carl Olson and granddaughter of maternal grandparents Glenn and Libby Beard, all of whom predeceased her. Kay’s two daughters, Heidi Herreshoff and Kirsten Herreshoff, also predeceased her.

Kay attended local schools in Grand Haven, Mich. After high school, she attended University of Michigan, where she met and later married Nathanael G. Herreshoff, III, of Bristol, R.I. Nat and Kay lived many years in New Jersey, where they raised their four children: Halsey II, Heidi, Kirsten, and Karl. Their extended family includes a grandson, Sidney Gilbert, son of the late Kirsten Herreshoff, and a daughter-in-law, Mary Kate Herreshoff, wife of Halsey II.

Throughout her active life, Kay enjoyed working in various businesses and organizations including: the management office of John Wanamaker’s department store, and the Burlington County Art League, for which she wrote a newsletter, the Mount Holly Junior Woman’s League, and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church as member of the choir.

When she and Nat separated, she moved to Ambler, Pa., and later to Ardmore, Pa. During that time, she worked for Spring House Corporation, a medical publishing company, as a customer service representative and later a licensed property and casualty agent for their insurance division.

In later years, she worked for Waverly Heights Ltd., a retirement community in Gladwyne, Pa., where she worked as a unit clerk in the skilled nursing facility. Later, she worked at Pendle Hill, a Quaker conference and study center for adults in Wallingford, Pa., where she served as a receptionist and admission coordinator for the adult study program. Finally, she was employed by the Delaware Valley Friend School in Paoli, Pa., until her recent retirement.

Kay appreciated evening art classes in Mount Holly, N.J., Fleischer Art Memorial in Philadelphia, and the Main Line Art Center in Haverford, Pa., where she discovered her favorite medium, oil pastels. In addition to art, Kay enjoyed classical music, literature, gardening, and thoughtful discourse. Through the years she took part in social groups that attended movies, concerts, art museums, white water rafting, skiing, and vacations to Bristol, R.I. and the Jersey and Delaware Shores.

Most of all, Kay cherished the time she spent with her loving family and friends, especially Forrest, Gloria, Mary, Rebecca, Nancy, Charry, and her holiday crew. Kay will be missed dearly by her sons, who will remember her for her kind heart, keen insight, and lively conversation. Kay’s ashes will be interred in the Herreshoff family plot with her girls, Heidi and Kirsten, and their dear cousins, Natalie Herreshoff and Clara Herreshoff at a private memorial service this summer.
