Tiverton freshman guard Mariah Ramos scored 20 points in leading the Lady Tigers in a come from behind, overtime home victory 46-40, in a D-III East division battle on Thursday night.

“Mariah is our unbelievably poised freshman. She is our hardest worker. She was my neighbor for many years and I would see her and her brother (Shane) shooting and ball faking in the driveway” said Head Coach Jonette Lopes.

Ramos added, “Getting to play with my older brother made me stronger. I also played in a boys league. It made me a good shooter and a strong player.”

Ramos was money down the stretch as she matched Mt. Hope senior guard Jenna Cimbron (14 points) shot for shot in the second half.

“We played really well. We came out hot and lead 22-13 at half time. Tiverton is a really good team. The best team in the league,” said Huskies Head Coach Victor Kashouh, adding, “They came out in the second half, figured out what we were doing and it came down to an overtime game.”

With the Huskies clinging to a 23-21 lead with 12:33 to play, Ramos tied the score with a layup on a fast break from guard Aja Caldwell. Ramos then gave the Tigers the lead 25-23, with another layup on another fast break pass from Caldwell. Ramos scored again on yet another fast break pass from Caldwell, this time collecting a foul for a three point play to stretch the Tigers lead to 29-23 with 9:53 to play.

Huskies guard Jenna Cimbron struck back with a jumper and cut the lead to 29-25.

Mt. Hope forwards Sarah Godfrey and Grace Moclair took control of the boards down the stretch as the Huskies fought their way back into the game.

Huskies forward Laura Marshall put back a rebound making the score 32-27 with 7:46 to play.

Caldwell hit a jumper for the Tigers to make it 34-27.

Godfrey drove to the hoop and picked up a foul, making both shots, 34-29.

Cimbron grabbed a defensive rebound from under the Tiverton hoop and dribbled up to the three point line. She faked and then hit a three making the score 34-32 with 5:17 left. Godfrey made it 35-34 with 4:27 left to play.

Ramos again stretched the lead hitting a jumper to make it 37-34.

Cimbron dribbled up to the three point line and hit another three to tie the score, 37-37 with 3:22 to play.

Godfrey pulled down a monster rebound when Caldwell’s jumper hit the rim. She handed the ball to Cimbron, but the Huskies failed to score.

Tiverton took the lead when Ramos hit a three to give the Tigers a 40-37 lead with 2:47 left in the game.

“Mariah played CYO for me in 7th and 8th grade and was hitting threes. We won the CYO championship. Ever since I’ve known her she has been shooting up the three,” said coach Lopes.

Cambrian passed the ball inside to Moclair who swung the ball to Marshall. Marshall’s jumper bounced off the rim back to Moclair. This time she found Cimbron on the three point line. Swoosh! Cambron tied the score 40-40 with 2:25 to play.

“I’ve coached Jenna for four years. She hit 1000 points in our game against Central Falls (Feb. 7). She is a really good player. As she goes our team goes. Today she really played well, scoring and dishing the rock. She’s my star player,” said coach Kashouh.

Both teams attempted shots but didn’t score.

Tiverton called time out and drew up play, but, Godfrey stole the the ball and ended the Tigers bid as time ran out and the game went to overtime.

Overtime

With the clock set to four minutes, Godfrey slapped the jump ball out of bounds giving Tiverton the first possession.

Ramos missed a jumper and Godfrey rebounded the ball and gave it to Cimbron. Godfrey and Cimbron took turns driving to the hoop, but were turned away by Tigers senior center Rachel Pare.

The Huskies grabbed the rebound and were desperate to score. A Cimbron jumper hit the rim. The rebound went to Godfrey who was surrounded by Tigers. The ball dropped to the floor. Godfrey collapsed after it, but Caldwell beat her to the ball and passed it out to Andrews.

The Tigers struck first with just over two minutes left to play. Caldwell dribbled up and passed the ball inside to senior forward Sydney Pelletier (4 points). Pelletier faked and dished it back out to Caldwell. The guard uncovered on the three point line, buried the shot giving the Tigers a 43-40 lead.

“I called time out and set up a play. It was going to be a box three where Aja flashes to the basket, but she came out open off a screen and took a wide open shot and it went in. It was just amazing. Aja has been hitting some big shots when we really need her to step up,” said coach Lopes.

The Huskies had multiple chances to get back into the game, but were unable to sink a single shot. Marshall drove to the basket and yielded a foul, but missed both free throws.

“We had a lot of opportunities. I think fatigue had a lot to do with it. We are not too deep and we got tired at the end. The shots that fell in the first half didn’t fall in the second half. They gave a great defensive effort. When you play Tiverton you have to play a full 32 minutes. In this case, 36 minutes,” said coach Kashouh.

Pare grabbed the rebound passed up to Caldwell who found Ramos standing under the basket and she hit a nifty jumper giving the Tigers a 45-41 lead with 48 seconds to play.

A Huskies turnover gave the Tigers back the ball. The Huskies fouled forward Jillian DaSilva and she hit one of two giving the Tigers a 46-40 overtime victory.

“Our defense was really fantastic in the end when we really needed it to be,” said coach Lopes.

“We did well moving the ball around and remaining calm in overtime,” said Ramos.

When asked who wins the games between her and her brother Shane, who plays for the Tigers boy’s team, she added, “Sometimes it’s a tie, but mostly him. He rough’s me up a little bit,” she said with a smile.

The win boosts the Tigers record to 16-1 in Division III East as the Huskies fall to 11-6.

Both teams expect to be in the playoffs.
