Suspect tries to run down cops during arrest

Bristol officers were unharmed in the Wood Street drug bust

Bristol police officers escaped potentially serious injuries when they narrowly avoided a suspect who allegedly tried to run them down with his car during a drug bust last week.

On May 13, officers descended on Wood Street in the area near the Portuguese Independent Club, where they had been engaged in a months-long cocaine investigation. During a surveillance operation, undercover and uniformed officers watched as their suspect — Miguel Rodriguez, 26, of 14 Dora St., Providence — arrived outside the Portuguese Club at 588 Wood St. The officers moved in after witnessing Rodriguez sell cocaine outside the club, according to reports.

Seeing police close in, Rodriguez fled, intentionally driving at officers and crashing into two unmarked patrol cars during the escape, police reports indicate. Police chased the car down Wood Street, onto Bayview Avenue, where Rodriguez crashed at George Street. He and another man in the car — Luis Francisco, 20, of 41 Jenkins St., Providence — fled on foot, but were soon chased down and arrested.

Police reportedly seized about $400 worth of cocaine, along with an undisclosed amount of cash, phones and drug paraphernalia.

Rodriguez, who reportedly had been selling cocaine outside the club for months, was charged with possession of cocaine with intent to deliver, two counts of felony assault, two counts of failing to stop after an accident, eluding police, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

Francisco was charged with controlled substance conspiracy, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

Both men are being held at the ACI in Cranston pending court appearances. Rodriguez is due for a bail hearing on May 26. Francisco is next due in court July 19.

Bristol Police Sgt. Steve St. Pierre led the investigation, assisted by Patrolmen Brett Estrella, Michael Kenney and Sean Gonsalves.
