TIVERTON — A man suspected of committing a robbery of the north Tiverton branch of Bank Newport on April 2 was arrested Monday in Bristol.
Cody Toolis, 27, of Fall River, was thereafter arraigned in District Court in Newport on charges of 2nd degree robbery, and is being held as a fugitive on separate Massachusetts charges, said Tiverton Police Chief Patrick Jones Monday night.
Mr. Toolis is also suspected in a Massachusetts strong-armed robbery in Dartmouth of an elderly woman, who he allegedly had pushed to the ground before taking her purse, and is also a suspect in an auto theft in that state.
“At 9:21 a.m. on Monday, April 2, just after opening,” said Tiverton Police Chief Patrick Jones, the suspect (later identified as Mr. Toolis) entered the north end branch of Newport Bank and passed a note to a teller at the back, saying it was a robbery.
"He threatened her with a weapon; just a threat, no weapon was shown," said Chief Jones.
An undetermined amount of money was handed over to him, and he fled, said the chief.
The investigation following the robbery made extensive use of social media. Tiverton police posted surveillance film of the robbery, “within minutes” Chief Jones said, indicating the man shown was a “person of interest.”
