Have you ever wondered what it would be be like to perform in an orchestra? Now is your chance!

Join the Downtown Providence Parks Network as they create a luminous soundscape with interactive musical piece Phil Kline’s “Unsilent Night.” The group will meet at Grant’s Block and wind its way through city streets and parks, playing what the New York Times calls a “nebula of phosphorescent sound.”

This year, Providence will be one of 150 cities participating in the project, and they need help. Each iteration is unique, molded by the community, specific route, and acoustic conditions therein. In a city, the buildings, people, and traffic work their way into the composition, shaping the sound and experience.

The event is free to attend, but guests are encouraged to register for a full description of how to participate.

Before the event, have every member of your party visit the Unsilent Night website to download one of the four tracks and get tips on what type of speaker to bring. Attendees should download the track that corresponds to their birth month:

• Janurary, Feburary, March: download track 1
• April, May, June: Track 2
• July, August, September: Track 3
• October, November, December: Track 4

What is Unsilent Night?

Unsilent Night is an original composition by Phil Kline, written specifically to be heard outdoors in the month of December. It takes the form of a street promenade in which the audience becomes the performer by playing parts of the peice on boomboxes and other portable speakers. What to expect

This is an all-ages event open to anyone! We'll gather at Grant's Block at 5:30 p.m. and kick off around 6 p.m. for a promenade through the streets of Providence, ending at Waterplace Park.

Prepare to Participate!

This is a participatory experience! If you can, please download one of the four tracks here and bring some sort of device on which to play it. A phone with a bluetooth speaker works fine, or any other portable speaker. We may have a few extra bluetooth speakers on hand if you're not able to bring one.
