PROVIDENCE — Led by two goals from Ireland McGreavy, the Tiverton High School girls’ field hockey team traveled to Classical and defeated the host Purple by a final score of 3-1 in a Division II-North contest played Monday afternoon, Oct. 17.
The Tigers scored twice in the first half and held on to the lead as they improve to 8-6-1 on the year while Classical fell to 1-11.
“This October has been horrendous for us,” Tiverton co-head coach Chris Messenger said. “We can dominate the game, but can’t put the ball in the net and today we did.”
Tiverton gained control right after the opening face off. The Tigers went on to keep offensive possession for the first 10 minutes, but failed to get any quality scoring chances. Halfway through the first period, Sacha Duggan passed to McGreavy who shot the ball wide of the net. Just minutes later, McGreavy would drive the ball home after minutes spent deep in Classical’s zone. This put the Tigers up 1-0 with just under 12 minutes before intermission.
Classical proceeded to gain some momentum, but failed to do anything with it. The Tigers took advantage again as McGreavy received a pass from fellow captain Haley Mendoza right in front of the net for her second goal, which put Tiverton up 2-0 with five minutes remaining in the half.
The Tigers would go on to to create several more chances prior the break, but didn't score as they headed into the half up 2-0.
Just over a minute into the second half, Tiverton resumed their dominance as Duggan took a tour of the offensive zone before putting it past the Purple's goalie to put the visitors up 3-0.
Midway through the second half, Classical started to gain momentum, but shot after shot went wide of the Tiverton net. Then, with nine minutes left in the game, Allyson Ramos made a leg save to keep the home team off the board. But Classical would go on to score with 6:38 left in the game, though it was too little too late as Tiverton hung onto for the win.
“We are still complacent at times in the offensive end,” Coach Messenger said. “Sometimes they get caught watching instead of getting into the right spots.”
Going forward, the Tigers might have to play without forward Arianna Helger as she recovers from a finger injury. It is unclear if she will be back for the playoffs. Tiverton will go into the playoffs lead by McGreavy, who is the Tigers' leading goal scorer, and midfielder Amelia Peterson, who has been “amazing all season long,” according to Coach Messenger. Defensively, Tiverton has been consistent throughout the fall, allowing just 11 goals as of Monday.
The Tigers have secured a spot in the upcoming league playoffs as they seek to dismiss the memory of last year’s heartbreaking triple overtime loss to Warwick Vets in the quarterfinal round.
“We have made the playoffs. We will probably be the sixth seed and play South Kingstown,” Coach Messenger said. “Like I said, if we could have scored some goals it might not have been like that, but we have to take our lumps and move forward."
South Kingstown entered mid-week with an 11-3 record in the II-South standings. The Tigers would face the Rebels on the road next week. The D-II quarterfinals are slated to be played on Monday, Oct. 24. Beforehand, Tiverton travels to Woonsocket for its regular season finale Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 19.
Coach Messenger added. "South Kingstown doesn’t score a whole lot of goals, but they are a very good team.”
