Letter: Let casino stay open 24/7, serve alcohol until 2

To the editor:

I am writing as a 20-year resident of Tiverton to register my support for Twin River’s petition to operate on a 24/7 basis and to extend its ability to serve alcohol to 2 a.m. on weekends and holidays.

In 2016, we voted to approve a casino in our community largely because of the sincere commitments of Twin River to operate it with as little impact on our neighborhoods as possible. We also voted to approve the casino for the much-needed, $4 million revenue it will provide to the town on an annual basis. Handicapping the ability of Twin River to generate the required level of revenue by restricting operations makes no sense to me, and it only hurts us taxpayers in the long run.

I am familiar with Twin River Casino in Lincoln and have observed the professionalism they employ to operate a much larger gaming venue than what we will have here in town. The round-the-clock opening means there is no mad dash to exit at late evening/early morning hours, allowing for a more orderly and thereby safer roadway experience. With all of the attention being paid to the round-a-bout and Stafford Road traffic in general, why would we ever want patrons and employees all leaving at the same time?

Last, it seems Twin River is offering us the opportunity to try it on a pilot basis for one year. If , after that period of time. the town decides in its wisdom it is not the right fit for the community, it can restrict the hours. Why not give them the chance to operate the casino in the way they believe will be most effective and efficient for all of us?

I urge the Town Council to approve these requests and I will be at the March 21 hearing to encourage them to do just that.
