I was struck by a comment in the August 17 edition of the Sakonnet Times that counselor Gary Mataronas said that he does feel for the farmer who is using a crop cannon to try to make a living and its impact on the peaceful atmosphere of his neighbors. The town is also facing a decision about whether or not to let the Sakonnet Vineyard have a new liquor license.

The first situation presents a conundrum about the very nature of our community, and balancing the interests within the community. The other opens the door to others, who have no direct interest in our community‘s quality of life using its bucolic nature for increased corporate profits at the same time risking disturbing the quality of life we most value.
