PORTSMOUTH — A 29-year-old Tiverton man was charged with manufacturing/possessing/delivering a controlled substance shortly before 3 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27.

According to police, patrol officers stopped Christian McCarthy, of 32 Haskins Ave., on Route 24 North on the Sakonnet River Bridge after observing him driving too close to the vehicle directly in front of him and also committing a roadway violation.

While conducting an inventory search of the vehicle, officers located a black backpack on the rear floor that contained small plastic bags, a lever, and a digital scale, police said.

A subsequent search of the passenger seat compartment yielded a large quantity of suspected cocaine within a cigarette box, according to police.

McCarthy was also charged with DUI, first offense, and he was cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test, police said.

Here are some more recent arrests from the Portsmouth Police report:

Wednesday, Jan. 24

Leslie Ann Streuli, 54, of 42 Kristen Court, was charged with DUI, first offense, after being pulled over on East Main Road at Hargraves Drive around 10 p.m. for multiple roadway violations, police said.

Sunday, Jan. 28

Carl Sage, 37, of 26 Pine Tree Road, was charged with domestic assault and battery, first offense; and DUI, first offense. Sage was pulled over on West Main Road at Corys Lane at about 1 a.m. It was later determined he had left his residence after being involved in a domestic altercation with a 31-year-old Portsmouth woman, according to police. Sage was also cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test, police said.
