TIVERTON —Janet Linhares retired last Thursday, Dec. 27, after 30 years as the children’s librarian in Tiverton.

And days before, on December 13, library trustee Barbara Donnelly stepped down after nearly 40 years on the board.

“As children’s librarian I was able to combine my love of both children and libraries in a perfect setting – the library of the town where I grew up!” Ms. Linhares said.

The library held a celebration of Ms. Linhares’ career on her retirement day with face painting, balloon artistry and cake.

Library Director Ann Grealish Rust said she will miss Ms. Linhares. “Janet has always kept the safety of the children and their families forefront in her decisions while managing the children's library. Her love of literature and ability to share that with so many children over the years is admirable, whether in the library or doing outreach in the community.”

On Dec. 13, long-time trustee Barbara Donnelly stepped down after nearly 40 years on the board. Ms. Donnelly joined the board of trustees in 1977, becoming chairwoman in 1981, a post she held nearly continuously until one year ago.

Ms. Donnelly began the process of investigating a location for a new town library in 1987, and shepherded the fund-raising and building process, culminating in the creation of the new library at 34 Roosevelt Ave. Trustee Chairman Greg Jones presented her with a plaque enumerating her many accomplishments.

“Barbara has been a dedicated member of the Tiverton Library Board of Trustees for many years, serving as chair for over 25 years, Mr. Jones said.

“Among her many accomplishments, Barbara was instrumental in the construction of the new library.  The new library is a wonderful asset that all town residents can be proud of.  It was due to her vision and perseverance that the library was completed.  We wish Barbara all the best in her retirement — she will be missed.”
