A non-profit arts foundation in Warren is seeking to establish a scholarship honor a prolific writer and artist who died earlier this summer, and they’re holding a show of his work to help fund it.

The Collaborative, at 498 Main St., will open a show of the late Christopher Roe’s work from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, August 30, at the Collaborative. The opening coincides with Art Night.

Mr. Roe, who passed away in early July at age 75, was a prolific painter and poet who created hundreds, if not thousands, of works over the course of his career. His subjects dealt with Ireland, his beloved adopted town of Warren, life, death and living.

After his death, Mr. Roe’s family members donated a large collection of his works to the Collaborative, and The Collaborative’s Uriah Donnelly said he thinks the idea of a scholarship for Mt. Hope High School art students is fitting. Mr. Donnelly said Collaborative members are also considering other fitting places to donate from the proceeds of the sale:

“We wanted to do something to honor Chirs and his support of the arts and the town for so many years,” Mr. Donnelly said. “He was a big fan of ours and an artist here. We thought to have an art show and donate the proceeds to some deserving organization that he liked, would be something he’d be proud of.”

One hundred percent of the proceeds from the show will be donated in Mr. Roe’s memory, and there are dozens of works to choose from. Mr. Donnelly said pieces will be sold at low prices, with many artworks going for $50 or less and some larger ones priced in the neighborhood $75.

Mr. Roe, he said, touched many lives in Warren, not only through his many books of poetry and paintings of local scenes, but through his good nature and encouragement of other artists.

“He did a lot of work,” Mr. Donnelly said. “He was prolific and he was always working on something, whether it was painting or writing. He was very creative.”
